Thromboplastin (PT)
Prothrombin time is a screening test for coagulation. It is used to measure the activity of the factors of the extrinsic pathway such as II, V, VII, X and fibrinogen.
- Congenital or acquired deficiencies of factors II, V, VII, and X.
- Liver failure or hepatitis
- Treatment with vit. K antagonists like warfarin or coumadin
- Deficiency of vit. K
- Fibrinolysis
- DIC
APTT
Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) is a general coagulation screening test for the factors XII,XI,,IX,VIII,X,V,II and fibrinogen.
Mainly used for :
- preoperative screening
- Detection of deficiencies of factors XII, XI, IX , VIII.
- Monitoring of unfractionated heparin therapy
